Is Vasectomy Right for Me?

Is a Vasectomy Right for Me?

The vasectomy procedure is a safe, effective, and permanent form of birth control. While the procedure itself isn’t too complex, here are some things that you should consider as you learn about it and decide whether or not it is right for you.

1. CONSIDER THE BENEFITS

Compared to other forms of birth control, vasectomies are more effective. They are also permanent, affordable and completely safe.

They don’t have long-term side effects or affect sexual enjoyment or performance, while having short recovery times.

2. MAKING THE DECISION

Getting a vasectomy is a good option if you are sure that you don’t want pregnancy again. It is a choice that requires thoughtful consideration between you and your spouse.

We offer a free preliminary consultation to allow you to discuss any of your questions with our one our doctors.

3. VASECTOMY & THE MALE ANATOMY

What do vasectomies actually do? It’s pretty simple, but understanding the anatomy helps you visualize what is going on.

In short, a vasectomy prevents sperm from traveling up the vas deferens to the penis. The vas deferens are safely cut and sealed to prevent sperm from traveling up the vas deferens to fertilize semen. As semen flow is not affected, there is no difference in sexual performance.

4. The Procedure

The vasectomy procedure itself is pretty simple. It consists of sedation (optional), anesthetic application to eliminate pain during the operation, a small incision to your scrotum, removing a small portion of the vas deferens, and sealing the vas deferens and scrotum.

That’s it! With a trained physician, you’re in safe hands during the procedure.

5. Life After Vasectomy

What can you expect after a vasectomy? Pain will be minimal and will subside after a few days. You should avoid strenuous physical activity for a while and can resume sexual activity (usually after a week).

Remember to use other birth control until existing sperm in your system is gone (check with your doctor a six weeks after your vasectomy). Once your sperm count is zero, you won’t have to use birth control ever again!
